Pineapple Sage ~ Salvia elegans
The smell of these leaves is absolutely divine, really truly like a beautiful ripe pineapple which funnily enough reminds me of Christmas! It has bright red tubular flowers which are great for bees.
A native of Mexico and Guatemala, the Pineapple Sage likes a light well-drained soil with a fairly sunny position. Can grow to 1.5m so doesn’t mind having the odd prune now and again just to keep it from not getting too leggy.
Traditionally it was used to relieve anxiety and depression (the smell cheers me up!) but this hasn’t been thoroughly researched.
The leaves and flowers can be used in fruit salads, teas and fruit punches, I’m sure it wouldn’t go astray in some cocktails either! (Does anyone still drink Malibu??)
